More Pictures

Sorry... that is a lame post title.

(Aug 26)

After both boys were off respiratory support and in open cribs, they moved them to NICU 2 upstairs on the Mom/Baby floor. The same nurse as before, Amy, took some more pictures of them, and even got a few together. I know they are a little delayed... but this is how they looked about 3 weeks ago. Darn cute! And so tiny.

It is wonderful to have them home. We are all still doing really well. They will have weekly weight checks at the pediatrician's office. We had family & newborn pictures taken last Wednesday, so I will post some once I get them.

It's a bit tricky to feed two babies at the same time. I would have thought bottle feeding would have been easiest, but I have figured out that tandem nursing is actually the easiest. The hardest part of that is what to do about the other boys... the big boys. I quickly went to Target to pick up some "special toys" that they can only play with while I am tending to the babies. Not sure how long it will work for, but it has worked so far!

38 days later...

...and we're home!
Griffin (L) & Oliver (R)

Weights when they were born:
G: 3 lbs, 9 oz; O: 3 lbs, 8 oz

Weights when we left the hospital:
G: 5 lbs, 6.5 oz; O: 4 lbs, 15 oz

All I have to say at this time... I am tired of that place!

Coming Home Soon!

Griffin - 2425g

Oliver - 2210g

These boys are doing great! I start "boarding in" today. That means I am provided a room just down the hall from the NICU so I am able to nurse around the clock. If they do well nursing that frequently, after 2 days the boys will room in with me. "Rooming in" means the boys will join me down the hall, but keep their monitors on. Rooming in is the last step before going home! It usually lasts 2 days, as long as they have enough wet diapers and don't lose weight. So probably Tuesday at the earliest. We are excited to share our home with these two sweet babies!

Thank you to everyone that has helped us and offered your help. You are all wonderful!! We have so many awesome friends and family and neighbors!

Lincoln's Visit to the NICU

We brought Lincoln in to the hospital to visit Griffin & Oliver on Sunday. This was his second time visiting. The first time the babies had lots of tubes going everywhere and he could only see them through the incubators. This time we let him hold them. It was very sweet how happy he was to see them and interact with them.

[side note: Parker isn't old enough to enter the NICU since you have to be at least 2 years old.]

Lincoln, Mama, & Oliver

Mama, Lincoln, & Griffin

The babies are doing great! As of this morning, I am able to nurse them as often as I want throughout the day, and then let them rest through the night. They are still gaining weight. The doctor this morning said we are in the "home stretch"... the end is in sight! It still depends on how the babies do and if they keep improving so quickly. They could come home possibly as early as... the weekend?? Hopefully?? Maybe early next week? We will see!

So Happy Together

Lincoln loves this YouTube clip:

We got a few pictures of the two boys together. They were both awake, but that also means they were both squirmy... hard to get a good shot of both of them!

Can you tell who is who?

Griffin (left) & Oliver (right)

Some differences:
  • Griffin is probably 1/2 lb heavier, round head, chubbier cheeks, a little birth mark on his left calf, round face, short toes.
  • Oliver is small-boned, long face, oval head, bigger eyes, long toes.
Besides gaining weight (yay!) there are no changes... Nursing hasn't improved, but that takes time since they are so young. We (meaning me, mostly) are trying to be patient.

Parker's New Bed

We had to kick him out of his crib eventually, but since Griffin & Oliver came earlier than expected, we put Parker on a mattress just like Lincoln (I know, I know... we just haven't gotten around to getting a frame for Lincoln...) earlier than expected. I was a little hesitant to do it, but he LOVES it. He has always loved Lincoln's bed and crawls around on it. Now that he has his own he is excited to lay down to sleep (at least the one time I laid him down...).

Parker & Lincoln at 6am the first morning
 I heard them giggling and
this is what they were doing.

(yes, I realize it is blurry, but I am not going to
turn the light on during naptime just to take a picture)

Oliver (22 days old)

They are growing up so fast! Haha... The boys are in open bassinets (goodbye, incubators!), no more respiratory support, and I am beginning to nurse them. Now that their high flow tubes are out, you can finally see their faces!

Their weight today:
Griffin: 2050g (4 lbs 8 oz)
Oliver: 1910g (4 lbs 3 oz)

Better Pictures - 5 days old

The nice nurse in the NICU took some awesome pictures for us when they were 5 days old. They look cute even though they have tons of tubes. Thank you, Amy!

Oliver

Not sure whose feet are whose... but they are both adorable.
Baby feet are always adorable.

Both babies are still doing well - right on track for their "age". If I had to guess... I would say another 3-4 weeks longer. But it could still be a lot longer than that. Just depends on their progress.

As for Lincoln & Parker... they seem to have forgiven me for leaving so long. Parker still wants "Up!" and is frustrated when I won't (because I can't... for another couple weeks - oh the joys of a c-section...). We will probably have to start all over once the babies come home from the hospital. I guess we'll see when the time comes!

Some Pictures, Baby Names, + Update

Here are some pictures from today. I was able to hold them both at the same time today. :) It is (finally) starting to feel REAL that I have TWO newborns. But... probably not until they are both home with us.

[Changing the pictures to sepia - brownish black & white - made it so the pictures weren't so dark. Flash kinda scares/upsets them. And yes, it was my third arm taking the 3rd picture of all three of us.]

Griffin

Oliver

My first time holding both at once (today)

Griffin (Baby A):
  • back under bili lights
  • 1 more day of antibiotics (I think)
  • on a 6 with his CPAP (down from 8)
  • 1440 grams today (down from 1620 grams at birth) but not losing any more the last couple days
  • almost off TPN and over to breast milk (he gets about 1/2 oz BM now)

Oliver (Baby B):
  • off bili lights
  • no more IV, no more TPN
  • on a 6 with his CPAP (down from 9)
  • 1420 grams today (down from 1595 grams at birth) - today was first day he gained weight
  • fed by 100% breast milk (about 1/2 oz)

Middle names aren't final yet, but as you can see we gave our little boys names. I hope you like them. And if you don't - keep it to yourself.  haha...  :)

We brought Lincoln to see the babies for the first time today. It lasted maybe 30 minutes before we needed to leave. Since Parker isn't 2 yet, he can't see them until they are home. But he is not even close to understanding of what is going on, so it isn't a big deal. Lincoln seems to be having a hard time adjusting to me being back home. And Parker gets really frustrated when I won't pick him up (which won't be for another 3+ weeks). But they seem to be doing okay... hopefully they stop being so mad at me by the time the babies come home from the hospital (probably 3-8 weeks??).

My parents arrived here Monday evening. It is so nice to have help with the big boys (and everything else) while Jesse has been at work and I'm recovering from a c-section. My mom will stay here for 2 weeks, but my dad is going back tomorrow. He will come back to visit a couple more days when he comes to pick up my mom.

Welcome, Babies!

Our baby boys arrived Friday, August 3rd @ 29 weeks old (11 weeks early). Their names are undecided at this point (we're working on it...).

*Baby A:
3:10am
3 lbs, 9 oz
37 cm long (~14.6 in)

*Baby B:
3:12am
3 lbs, 8 oz
38 cm long (~15 in)

They arrived via cesarean section unable to breathe, but just a little work from the NICU team and they were stable.

Currently, they are
  • on CPAP room air (continuous pressure via nasal cannula, room air)
  • in incubators (to keep body temperature stable)
  • on TPN via IV (basically liquid nutrition into their IVs), and breast milk via oral feeding tube (usually a nasogastric tube, but their noses are full of tubes already)
  • on antibiotics as well
  • (all other cords are just monitoring heart rhythms, breathing patterns, and oxygen saturation)
We got to hold them for the first time later that evening at 7pm. We will take it one day at a time, so we really don't know how long they will be in the NICU.

Mama is doing great. Already down to 1 Percocet & 800mg ibuprofen (last cesarean, I was still on morphine at this point, then I weaned to 2 Percocet & 800mg ibuprofen, then after being home more than a week, I was at 1 Percocet...)
Baby A

Baby B
(their skin is thin, so it looks really red)
Look at that blonde hair!

Holding Mama's hand

So teeny tiny!!!
(notice my four hospital bracelets...)

What happened?

Thursday morning (Aug 2nd) I woke up with pink-tinged water. During my shower I had contractions every 3-4 minutes (not so relaxing..). Magnesium sulfate (via IV) was started by 10:20am, which gave me a huge headache that lasted ALL day but slowed contractions down to every 10 minutes, then every 15, then every 20-25 minutes. This medication is used for 12 hours, so at about 10:30pm they turned it off. Oh ya... those contractions happening all day...... HURT. Badly.

By 1:30am contractions were coming every 3-5 minutes (and Lortab was not taking the edge off!). I was checked and since my cervix was at 5cm, an ultrasound to determine babies' positions was done. Baby A was still head down, but B was completely breach - meaning cesarean it was. In the next hour I was in the operating room being cut open.

And voila! We have 2 (more) beautiful, healthy baby boys! We are now a family of 6! That was quick!

My Water Broke....

Seriously???? I'm not due until OCTOBER.

(BIG siiiiigh... one: because I'm frustrated - it is too early for these babies to come!!! two: because I need the extra air! These babies are getting big!)

So I am 27 weeks and 5 days today. I was admitted on Sunday at 27 weeks, 2 days. Here's the "story"...

We were at church in Sacrament Meeting, and Jesse went out in the hall with Parker because he was being... a 17-month old. I read Lincoln all the books I had with me, and during the last book, the speakers were done and the closing song began. I reached down to put the books away and felt something... kinda like I briefly peed my pants. And it happened again 5 seconds later. And 5 seconds after that. I did need to go to the restroom... but normally I have control so I was a little worried. After the prayer, Jesse came back in and I told him I think my water broke and I need to check in the bathroom. Sure enough, by the time I walked down the hall, it was pretty clear that my water had indeed broken. Jesse met me outside the restroom, and I told him I was pretty sure it was my water. We walked out to the van and by the time we got to it I was sloshing in my heels (thank goodness I wore my old, worn out pair... those will need to be tossed...). Jesse informed me then that my cushioned, fabric covered chair I had been sitting on (in the overflow section, not the pews) was very wet. "Did you fold it up and put it aside???" Yikes... I am truly sorry to anyone and everyone that discovered that damp chair the same day. The thought makes me cringe. Both boys went on to nursery, while Jesse & I went home (sitting on a towel we happened to have in our trunk... don't want to get the new van messy!). Terrel & Janet came over. Terrel & Jesse gave me a blessing, and Janet packed up a few kids clothes so she could pick up the boys from church and stay with her for a night. Then Jesse gathered a few things for me and brought me to the hospital. And I've been here ever since!

Initially, I wasn't allowed food and an IV was started. I was given medications to stop contractions (that got to about every 3-4 minutes). Babies looked great and contractions stopped. IV antibiotics were started to help prevent an infection (since the amniotic sac/bag of water is the protective barrier from infection for the babies). I've been here on bed rest with "bathroom privileges" (I can take a shower and use the restroom). Currently, I'm off all IV medications & anti-contraction medications but on oral antibiotics. I have occasional contractions. Babies still look really good. We are all hoping my body will hang on til 28 weeks, and then 30 weeks, and then 32 weeks, and it would be awesome if I make it to 34 weeks (almost 2 months being on bed rest in the hospital...). Every day is precious for their development.

Some questions I'm sure you have.

How are Lincoln & Parker doing?
They want me to come home. This is definitely the hardest part about being here. I miss them terribly. They haven't been able to visit yet because they are sick. I have done (free) video chat via Gmail with them each night. I love seeing their smiles and hearing them say "Mama!" They are being tended by the Davis girls (my sister-in-law, Audrey's sisters). They love playing with Lola & Flora May, but they are excited when Jesse picks them up after he gets off work.

Are you bored??
Yes, but I manage to keep myself busy with Nursing CEUs (to prevent my nursing license from expiring in January), canceling appointments, e-mail, phone calls, hospital visits, magazines, TV (my favorite show is Chopped on the Food Network, but that's basically the only show I watch), games on the iPad (have you ever played Quarrel? It's kind of like Scrabble but more fun and against the computer...), canceling a musical number in August, books, and visiting with the nursing staff. Jesse also visits me at least once a day (which is definitely the highlight of the day :) ).

Do you have names picked out?
Nope. Unless you count a list of 10-12 that needs to be narrowed down (Jesse isn't helping... hint, hint...).

How much do the doctors estimate the babies weigh right now?
Monday I had an ultrasound with a bunch of measurements, and one baby is estimated to weigh 2' 11" and the other 2' 15". That was when I was 27 weeks, 3 days.

Can I do anything to help?
Sure. What do you have in mind? Were you thinking folding laundry or scrubbing toilets? I'm pretty sure they both need done at the house (however, you will have to get around Jesse). Can you find us a crib? We won't need it for at least a couple months, but we will need another one. I can't really think of anything... HOWEVER, after the babies are born and we bring them home, I'm sure I will be able to think of something then. :-)

Do you like the hospital food?
It's actually pretty good.

Okay, so you didn't really have that last question. I thought I'd humor you a bit anyway.

So we are all doing well (for the most part) and everything is going smoothly at this point. It's not a fabulous way to spend your last days/weeks/months pregnant, but every day is worth it to further the babies' development. I miss all my boys very much. Hopefully they are well enough to come visit me tomorrow! I hope you enjoyed/endured my update. It's nice to talk/chat/vent via blog. I will/might keep you updated. Haha.

Random

Lincoln loves watching The Piano Guys perform their songs (via YouTube). He also is not liking to lay down for nap time recently. So sometimes we compromise (if you can even call it that..) and he gets to watch a few songs until he gets sleepy/falls asleep.

Okay... so I'm pretending in this picture,
but had I not been holding my laptop I totally would have fallen asleep.

Lately Parker has really enjoyed his rocking horse elephant.
He goes crazy until he gets hurt. Of course, right?

"The car's hungry!"

That's what Lincoln thinks about putting gas in a car. He also LOVES to "help".

This face of his reminds me of my brother, Jeff.

Swimming & Splash Pad

Summer is officially here! Well, for those of us who live a little further south, anyway. Here are more pictures of swimming at Mimi's house, plus our first visit of the year to the splash pad downtown.

Parker LOVES water. If you turn on a faucet anywhere in the house, he thinks it's time for a bath/to go swimming/to play and splash. Lincoln was so much more hesitant going into the water that this love of Parker's has taken me by surprise!

Parker winding up for a "hop"

Hop!
(more like bending and straightening his knees)

This has been Lincoln's BRAVEST time in the water. I told him I'd fetch his cars at the bottom of the pool if he put the floaties on. I gently pushed him into the deep end and NO freak out! In fact, Lincoln went back and forth between the sides of the pool and the middle.

Here's his super proud smile.  :)

(April 20th) Play group at the splash pad! I think we went a little too early because it wasn't long before Parker started shivering and even Lincoln wanted his towel!

Parker loves to watch (& mimic!) Lincoln

Having a great time just sitting there splashing.

After drying off, getting dressed, and Parker sitting in the stroller, Lincoln always insists on pushing him around.

"Car is back here, Lincoln!"

And we're having...

2 more boys! (Jesse has been right every single time...)

I am getting so outnumbered here. 5 boys and 1 girl. I guess we have ourselves a basketball team, right? I'll be the coach cheerleader.

Some of you are wondering... did I cry? Nope. I would have been shocked if we were having a girl. Even though I guessed one of each... I expected 2 boys.

Things to expect/look forward to:
  • dents in the walls
  • lots of punching
  • lots of future missionaries
  • extra help with yard work
  • purchasing an extra fridge/freezer (boys eat a lot, right?)
  • messes
  • little boy hugs & kisses... lots of them!  :)

I'm pretty happy. I love my boys! They are so cute and I can't wait (actually... I can! No need to rush them here!) to enjoy me some more!
